After losing to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and conceding four first-half goals, Woodgate says he was frank with his players in the dressing room at the Riverside.

"I was really disappointed about that performance, and I let the players know in no uncertain terms that it does not happen again," he said.

"I'm glad there's a game on Tuesday so we don't have to wait until the following Saturday.

"It's an opportunity for us to go out and win."

Opponents Preston are in good form and will arrive at the Riverside in good spirits.

"It's going to be a test for us," he said.

"Preston are unbeaten [in the league] since August, scored 17 goals, and the have a really good manager and backroom team.

"The manager has built them up now over a couple of years and he's got a chairman who's given him that time.

"At times last season they struggled a bit but the chairman stayed with him and kept on believing in what he's doing.

“It's great to have a young manager like Alex and what he's achieved with Norwich and Hamilton as well has been top drawer."
