Jonny Howson was pleased for the match practice as Boro came away from Gateshead with a 3-1 victory.
Howson captained Boro and scored the opening goal, capitalising on a Heed defensive error with a bit of quick thinking.
Playing in a right-back role, the 31-year-old says it was good to get 45 minutes in the bank after missing the trip to Austria for the birth of his son.
"It's always nice to get the games underway, and it's about getting up to speed again," he said.
"They can be difficult games - you have to go into it with the right, positive mindset.
"It's only early days and there are going to be mistakes.
"But you're looking to start to implement what the new manager wants and these are places where we can do that."
