The travelling Teessiders were without the likes of Aden Flint and Dani Ayala, while George Friend withdrew with injury during the second half.

Howson himself was utilised at wing-back for the match, and was handed the Boro captain's armband for the first time when Friend was replaced.

The midfielder says Boro dug in for an impressive win in what could have proved difficult circumstances.

"Second half we had a couple of chances and it would have eased the game, getting that second," he said.

"Nevertheless we got the three points and the win on the back of two disappointing results, I'd say, certainly it was hard to take conceding against Leeds so late and losing midweek.

"We showed good character to come back and get the win today with some lads missing through injuries and suspension.

"I thought we showed the strength of the squad there, the lads who came in have done very well and there are good players on the bench who didn't get to play as well.

"We've got as good honest team here, lads who give 100%, and some who've been waiting for their chance - they've done well today."
