Liverpool took the lead that night after 10 minutes when Jordan Rossiter struck from distance to beat Jamal Blackman in the Boro goal but the game would go to extra time following Adam Reach's second half equaliser.

The tie looked to be over when Suso scored but a surging run forward from Dani Ayala resulted in Patrick Bamford being brought down for a penalty with seconds to spare.

Bamford stepped up to take the penalty and scored for his second goal in a season that would end in 19 goals and him being named as the Championship Player of the Year for 2014/15.

Boro and Liverpool then staged a marathon penalty shoot-out in which the home side emerged as 14-13 winners.
