As we prepare to host Wycombe Wanderers for the first time in a league fixture, we couldn't resist looking back to our first ever meeting and the ultimate compliment made by our legendary former manager Jack Charlton.
Big Jack's Boro side were riding high in the top-flight - joint-top as January came to its conclusion - and our FA Cup third round opponents were a Wycombe side who were then amateur and playing in the Isthmian League.
It was the ultimate David v Goliath clash with all the romance and magic that the TV companies love about the FA Cup.
Needless to say the ITV cameras were present to see us held to a 0-0 draw at Loakes Park and were even in the dressing room after the game to capture Big Jack telling the Wycombe players that they had been magnificent and how we were lucky to have taken the tie to a replay.
Boro would be victors at Ayresome Park three days later courtesy of a goal from David Armstrong.
