A second-half goal from Richard Stearman was the difference at Bramall Lane, with Boro compounded by the sending off of defender Dani Ayala.

Pulis was pleased with the first half showing from his side, but felt chances needed to be turned into goals when they were in position.

“I thought we competed really well and played some good stuff in the first half, and we were probably the better side," he said.

“We had loads of opportunities where people needed to shoot, and we’re in positions where we’re trying to play little passes through when we can shoot, 20/25 yards out.

“But I was really pleased, I thought they competed well, they brought (Gary) Madine on in the second half and they went really direct, we’ve lost Aden (Flint) from the back and they played Madine up there and played really direct and got the seconds.

“It was a real tough game second half for the back players and when Dani (Ayala) gets sent off, I’m disappointed with the goal with the decision from the linesman.”
