Family Fun Is At The Heart Of The GRFZ
Whatever your age, there is always plenty to see and do when you attend the Generation Red Family Zone (GRFZ) on a Riverside matchday.
We hope the information below gives you a flavour of what to expect during your visit… but seeing really is believing!
Subs’ Bench (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)
The Subs’ Bench offers fans of under the age of 11 a warm and comfortable retreat away from the football whenever needed. Open at kick-off and throughout the match, you can catch the ‘Walking Bus’ every 15 minutes from the Creative Corner. Ideal for parents who have young supporters, you can enjoy a little bit of time out from the hustle and bustle of the game. Parents do need to accompany their children at all times.
Baby changing facilities, hot and cold drinks (strictly no alcohol), fruit and sweet goodies are available! There are also lots of fun activities with painting, board games, reading, book loaning, and singing, all of which links in to the national school curriculum, so children learn while having fun!
We also have an Xbox One, kindly donated by GAME Teesside Park, for our young supporters to enjoy playing FIFA!
Borrow A Book (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)
Book loaning takes place in the area known as ‘The Subs Bench’ for Under-11s and at the Creative Corner for Over-11s, aimed at encouraging children to read by borrowing books! Children are encouraged to write a review of the book they borrow. All book reviews will be entered into an end of season draw where the winner will receive a selection of books for their school.
MFC and WHSmith believe reading is very important in a child’s development.
The National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough, known locally as the Middlesbrough Reads campaign, is delighted to be working with the GRFZ to encourage families to read together.
- Bond with your bump! Reading out loud from picture books or singing nursery rhymes will help your unborn baby get to know your voice before they enter the world
- Chat to your little one while they are in the pram about the places you pass and your day-to-day activities
- Sharing stories for just 10 minutes every day will make your child happy and help them learn
Creative Corner (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)
At each match we have a different activity for children to join in with and enjoy, which links into the school curriculum. There's also lots of competitions to win some great prizes.
There are lots of activities planned throughout the season in the Creative Corner so check out our GRFZ Calendar of Events by clicking on the following link
Cornerstone Interactive Zone and Play the Player
A fantastic interactive zone for supporters of all ages. We have Xbox's and retro arcade games that are all free of charge to play. At each home game (excluding night matches) we are visited by a Boro player and some lucky supporters are given special tickets to ‘Play the Player’ on FIFA.
For our younger supporters, Cornerstone have kindly donated a Tweenies ride for you to have lots of fun.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road and MFC’s Rainbow (in association with Hollywood Bowl Teesside Park)
Our Yellow Brick Road is amazing with lots of local landmarks such as the Transporter Bridge, Temenos, Roseberry Topping plus more and some special guests such as Captain Boro, Boro Boy, Boro Girl and Princesses.
It really is worth checking out. See our own Dorothy sitting near Roseberry Topping! As you approach the end of our Yellow Brick Road see our MFC Rainbow! Check out the gold pot at the end of the rainbow.
Magically, little gifts keep appearing and if you’re lucky enough to find them you get to keep them! Find a special gold coin and you can trade it in at the GRFZ Retail Shop for a special mystery gift!
Will you be the lucky winner of bowling vouchers and even a bowling party for you and four friends?
Grab a flag and write your name on it (try and find the same flag next match!), wave it during the match, but remember to pop it back at the final whistle so others can enjoy it at the next game! Honesty flags are specially designed for the GRFZ and are available in the concourse each matchday. They are free for supporters to use.
Pitchside Flag Waving
Not only do we have our new Honesty Flags for all our young supporters to wave, but we have 12 fantastic flags to wave pitchside at the GRFZ as the players come on to the pitch. Will you be our lucky flag bearers? You just never know – you may get asked by one of our Supporter Services Activity Team Members to wave our amazing flags. If your children want to join in this activity please email firstname.lastname@example.org leaving your contact details and we will get back to you. Happy flag waving!
Dress in oversized Boro tops and shorts and finish the look off with a wig! We have princess dressing up outfits and accessories and superheroes outfits. So why not pop along and take a look. Dress up and look in the mirror and see how great you look. Selfies are allowed!
Guessing Games Corner
We have the following Guessing Games and if you are our winner, you will win some amazing prizes.
- Guess the first goal
- Guess the attendance
Are you famous? Check out our Photo Gallery. If you see yourself you can take the photo home! Just ask a member of the Activity Team for your photo.
You'll definitely hear the Apollo Street Band before you see them - with half a dozen drummers and brass to boot, they create an electric atmosphere from the North Stand to the GRFZ.
MFC MOT at the MFC Foundation Health Bus
Organised by MFC Foundation staff, at an MFC MOT you can have your blood pressure, body fat, height and weight measured plus much more. There are also healthy tips and advice on how to look after yourself.
Our loveable furry mascots, Roary and Bee-Active are always on hand to join in the fun and have photos with young fans. Roary often invites his friends throughout the season so you may see other mascots enjoying the fun in the GRFZ.
Get your Roary Rewards booklet stamped at each home game. When you have 5, 10 and 15 stamps Roary or one of his friends from the Activity Team will give you a little gift. Get all 23 stamps and you will get entered into a draw to be Roary’s little helper at a home game for season 2020-2021.
There are plenty of toilets throughout the concourse, all of which are child friendly.
The GRFZ has its own retail shop with stock chosen carefully following feedback from fans. It ranges from pocket money items starting at £2.50 through to warm and cosy hoodies at £25. You can also order items from the main Riverside store for collection at half-time or full-time. The GRFZ retail shop accepts payment by cash or card.
The catering provision within the GRFZ concourse has been shaped by feedback from supporters.
In addition to the usual matchday menu, we provide children’s meals for just £3.50, offering chicken nuggets, a burger or hotdog served with chips, a Capri Sun and a packet of Haribos.
Visit the Oriental Express for a variety of oriental food. Child’s portions available also.
There’s also a Candy Cart which has an assortment of sweet treats. There is something for everyone with our nostalgic collection of traditional confectionery.
