Family Fun Is At The Heart Of The GRFZ

Whatever your age, there is always plenty to see and do when you attend the Generation Red Family Zone (GRFZ) on a Riverside matchday.

We hope the information below gives you a flavour of what to expect during your visit… but seeing really is believing!

Subs’ Bench (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)

The Subs’ Bench offers fans of under the age of seven a warm and comfortable retreat away from the football whenever needed. Open at kick-off and throughout the match, you can catch the ‘Walking Bus’ every 15 minutes from the Creative Corner. Ideal for parents who have young supporters, you can enjoy a little bit of time out from the hustle and bustle of the game. Parents do need to accompany their children.

Baby changing facilities, mobile phone chargers, hot and cold drinks (strictly no alcohol) and sweet goodies are available! There are also lots of fun activities with painting, board games, reading, book loaning, and singing, all of which links in to the national school curriculum, so children learn while having fun!

New for this season in the Subs Bench, and kindly donated by GAME Teesside Park, is an Xbox One, for our young supporters to enjoy playing FIFA!

Birthday Celebrations

Want to celebrate your child’s birthday in the Subs’ Bench? Contact Supporter Services at [email protected], leaving a name and number and we will get back to you.

Borrow A Book (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)

Book loaning takes place in the area known as ‘The Subs Bench’ for under 7s and at the Creative Corner for over 7s, aimed at encouraging children to read by borrowing books! Children are encouraged to write a review of the book they borrow and these are all entered into an end of season draw where the winners receive a selection of books for their school.

MFC and WHSmith believe reading is very important in a child’s development.

The Middlesbrough Reading Campaign

The National Literacy Trust Hub in Middlesbrough is delighted to be working with the GRFZ to encourage families to read more together.

• Sharing books as a family helps to instil a love of reading in children and improves their future life chances.

• It's never too early to introduce books to your children – new-born babies love to hear the sound of your voice.

• Remember to keep sharing books together, even when your child is older and can read alone.

• Encourage older children to read to their younger brothers and sisters – it is a great bonding activity.

Look out for opportunities to win some free books throughout the season.

For more ideas on how to support your child’s literacy, visit the Middlesbrough Reading Campaign’s website or email [email protected].

Creative Corner (in association with WHSmith Teesside Park)

At each match we have a different activity for children to join in with and enjoy. There’s spot the ball, colouring in and lots more to do on our new activity sheets.

There are lots of activities planned throughout the season in the Creative Corner so check out our GRFZ Calendar of Events.

Cornerstone Interactive Zone and Play the Player

A fantastic interactive zone for supporters of all ages. We have Xbox's and retro arcade games that are all free of charge to play. At each home game (excluding night matches) we are visited by a Boro player and some lucky supporters are given special tickets to ‘Play the Player’ on FIFA.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road and MFC’s Rainbow (in association with Hollywood Bowl Teesside Park)

Our Yellow Brick Road is amazing with lots of local landmarks such as the Transporter Bridge, Temenos, Roseberry Topping plus more and some special guests such as Captain Boro, Boro Boy, Boro Girl and Princesses. It really is worth checking out. See our own Dorothy sitting near Roseberry Topping! As you approach the end of our Yellow Brick Road see our MFC Rainbow! Check out the gold pot at the end of the rainbow. Magically, little gifts keep appearing and if you’re lucky enough to find them you get to keep them! Find a special gold coin and you can trade it in at the GRFZ Retail Shop for a special mystery gift!

Honesty Flags

Grab a flag and write your name on it, wave it during the match, but remember to pop it back at the final whistle so others can enjoy it at the next game! Honesty flags are specially designed for the GRFZ and are available in the concourse each matchday. They are free for supporters to use.

Dressing-Up Corner

Dress in oversized Boro tops and shorts and finish the look off with a wig! We have princess dressing up outfits and accessories and superheroes outfits. So why not pop along and take a look. Dress up and look in the mirror and see how great you look. Selfies are allowed!

Guessing Games Corner

Guess the first goal and guess the attendance. Winners will win amazing prizes. Get a hat trick throughout the season and you will win a signed ball!

Apollo Arts

You'll definitely hear the Apollo Street Band before you see them - with half a dozen drummers and brass to boot, they create an electric atmosphere outside the Ayresome Gates and lead young fans to the GRFZ.

MFC MOT at the MFC Foundation Health Bus

Organised by MFC Foundation staff, at an MFC MOT you can have your blood pressure, body fat, height and weight measured plus much more. There are also healthy tips and advice on how to look after yourself.

Our loveable furry mascots, Roary, Bee-Active, Sketch, Bumper and Sally Seal, are always on hand to join in the fun and have photos with young fans.

Reward Cards

We like to say well done to our young GRFZ supporters when they have done something special or been well behaved, and reward our young fans with special prizes.

Remember our club core values are Honesty, Respect and Humility. MFC believe in rewarding our GRFZ young supporters when they have displayed good behaviour or carried out acts of kindness. Please let one of the Supporter Services Activity Team know and we will reward with a star sticker. When the card has eight and 16 stickers your child will be given a special reward.

There are plenty of toilets throughout the concourse and all of which are child friendly.

Retail Shop

The GRFZ has its own retail shop with stock chosen carefully following feedback from fans. It ranges from pocket money items starting at £2.50 through to warm and cosy hoodies at £25. You can also order items from the main Riverside store for collection at half-time or full-time. The GRFZ retail shop accepts payment by cash or card.

The catering provision within the GRFZ concourse has been shaped by feedback from supporters.

Following a restructure we now have a separate kiosk, Ringtons Tea dedicated to serving hot drinks.

Also, in addition to the usual match day menu, we provide children’s meals for just £3, offering chicken nuggets, a burger or hot dog served with chips, a Capri Sun and Haribo or a themed cookie.

Pasta Pronto has also returned to the GRFZ offering Penne Pasta served with a variety of Italian style sauces.

There’s also a Candy Cart which has an assortment of sweet treats. There is something for everyone with our nostalgic collection of traditional confectionery.

We have two spinning bikes based near the entrance to the pitch. Our aim was to cycle the distance to Dunkirk over the course of the season - Dunkirk is 374 miles (602 km) from Middlesbrough via road and ferry, so this would mean cycling for approximately 14 miles per home game between the two bikes. At our game against Brentford on Saturday September 30 2017, we arrived in Dunkirk! Well done everyone.

After starting the cycle again, we have now reached we have reached Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque (Dunkirk FC), whose stadium is named Stade Marcel-Tribut.

Are you famous? Check out our Photo Gallery. If you see yourself you can take the photo home! Happy memories

Not only do we have our new Honesty Flags for all our young supporters to wave, but we have 5 fantastic flags to wave pitchside at the GRFZ as the players come on to the pitch. Will you be our lucky flag bearers? You just never know – you may get asked by one of our Supporter Services Activity Team Members to wave our amazing flags. If your children want to join in this activity please email [email protected] leaving your contact details and we will get back to you. Happy flag waving!

We have a new painting on the wall near the Creative Corner. Why not pop along and get your photo taken. Can you see yourself in the painting? Painting by Drews Wonder Walls.

We missed it last season but it will be back during this season, so watch this space for more information. Keep practising your moves!
